Out and about!
Helston is an attractive old market town with a wide selection of shops serving the Lizard Peninsula, including a 24/7 supermarket and petrol stations. Curving old streets and steep alleys give way to sudden vistas of Cornish countryside. Helston is perhaps best known for the Furry Dance - an annual celebration of spring held in early-May.
Helston is within easy reach of many excellent beaches and coves around the Lizard Peninsula, such as Mullion Cove with its pretty harbour and Kynance with spectacular cliffs and coastal scenery. Near the tip of the Lizard is Church Cove, famous for its traditional thatched cottages and from where the beautiful southerly coast path leads to Hounsel Bay, where a cream tea and refreshments await at the hotel.
The area boasts a wealth of visitor attractions including Flambards theme park, Poldark Mine and the National Seal Sanctuary at Gweek.
The Helford River is nearby, the setting for many a classic novel and film. Here an utterly peaceful atmosphere may be experienced, whilst enjoying the luxuriant green woods and fields drifting down to meet the sea. Helford Passage is a tiny village on the estuary with a popular family pub The Ferry Boat Inn and a safe sandy beach.
A little further afield is Falmouth, boasting a comprehensive range of shops and the harbour - reputed to be the third largest natural harbour in the world. From here a short boat trip maybe taken to St Mawes or a longer but interesting voyage up the Fal to the County Town of Truro. Also worth a visit is the National Maritime Museum.
